How much do car wreckers pay for cars?

When selling a vehicle, prices aren’t random. Car wreckers base their offers on multiple factors such as the vehicle’s condition, mileage, and brand, but none of these alone decides the price. A Mini Cooper won’t automatically fetch more than a Toyota Wish just because it’s a different badge. The real price depends on a combination of factors:

• Functional parts- The more parts that can be salvaged and resold (engine components, electronics, panels, interior trim), the higher the offer. A car that’s been in a minor accident but still has a working gearbox, alternator, and doors is worth more to a wrecker than one that’s been stripped or badly damaged throughout.
• Engine size- Larger engines generally hold more value because they contain more usable metal and parts that are in demand for performance or towing vehicles.
• Vehicle popularity- Models with strong demand for spare parts, such as the Nissan Skyline and Toyota Corolla, tend to fetch more than less common models, since wreckers know they can resell the parts quickly.
• Mileage- Lower mileage usually means a higher price, but not always. A low-mileage car that’s been poorly maintained or has rust and mechanical issues can still be worth less than a higher-mileage car in good condition.
• Condition- A well-maintained vehicle, even with higher kilometres, will usually get a better price than a neglected one with lower kilometres.
• Weight- Heavier vehicles contain more scrap metal, which adds to the base value regardless of parts condition.
• Make & model- Brands and models that are common in New Zealand’s vehicle fleet tend to get higher offers than rarer imports, simply because there’s a bigger market for their parts.
• Year- Newer vehicles tend to have more modern, in-demand parts, but year alone doesn’t set the price; it’s weighed alongside condition and kilometres.

Vehicle type also plays a role. Smaller cars usually fetch less than station wagons, vans, or larger 4WDs, mainly because of the size difference and how much of the vehicle can actually be reused or scrapped.

Small cars

Small cars typically bring the lowest prices of any category. They contain less scrap metal by weight, and replacement parts for them are generally cheaper to buy new, which keeps demand and resale value for used parts lower.

4WDs

Four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles such as utes and SUVs cost more because their parts (transmissions, 4WD-specific drivetrain components, larger panels) are more expensive to replace, which keeps demand for used versions higher.
That is why a Nissan Skyline, despite being popular, still gets a lower wrecking price than a Toyota Hilux. Popularity affects how much a car is worth within its category, but the category itself sets a different baseline: a small car’s parts are simply cheaper than a 4WD’s, regardless of how in-demand the model is.

Vans

Van parts are expensive to replace with new ones, which makes people prefer used parts. So wreckers pay more for the vans. Popular commercial vans like the Toyota Hiace or Nissan Caravan are heavily used by tradespeople and courier fleets, which keeps demand steady for their engines, gearboxes, panels, and interior components and keeps wrecking prices higher.

Trucks

Trucks generally get the highest prices of all. They carry the most scrap metal by weight, and their parts, like transmissions, suspension components, and heavy-duty engines, are expensive and in constant demand, which pushes the wrecking price above that of every other vehicle type.
