I was browsing listings for the Mazda CX-3 and noticed something interesting: diesel models barely show up compared to petrol variants. That surprised me, so I looked into why.
Turns out it comes down to demand. Most Kiwi buyers preferred petrol engines, so Mazda only ever brought in a limited number of diesel CX-3s. Because of that, diesel listings are mostly limited to older 2015–2018 models, with prices for those diesel variants sitting between roughly $11,000 and $15,000.
Fewer listings also mean fewer choices if you’re specifically after a diesel and a longer search to find one. When you do find one, it’s often priced higher simply because supply is so limited. Parts and servicing can be trickier too, since fewer diesel CX-3s on the road means fewer options for diesel-specific parts.
