Preparation

To ensure you successfully and safely change a flat tyre you’ll need a few essential tools. Make sure sure you have these ready at all time in your car’s boot.

• A fully inflated spare tyre
• A scissor jack
• A lug wrench

Before you start preparing to change the tyre, ensure you are parked safely where the car is stationary and free from any dangers. If there appear to be any dangers, seek help or resolve them before continuing.

Steps

1. Remove anything covering your wheel, such as a hub cap to expose the wheel nuts.
2. Take your lug wrench and loosen the nuts on the wheel by turning anticlockwise. Don’t loosen the nuts completely, only enough to be able to twist the rest of it off with your hands when needed.
3. Once you have loosened all the nuts, it is time to position your scissor jack in place. If you’re unsure where the lifting point is, refer to your vehicle owner’s manual or read more about it here.
4. Once the jack is in position, gently turn it until the flat tyre has been lifted a few centimetres from the surface. Now you can completely twist off the loosened nuts, using the lug wrench if required.
5. Carefully remove the flat tyre and place it in a safe place. Position your fully inflated tyre into place, ensuring it is correctly positioned.
6. With your hand, take your previously removed wheel nuts and tighten them back onto the fully inflated tyre. To safely tighten the nuts, do it in the following sequence. 1. Tighten the top nut. 2. Tighten the nut directly opposite, on the bottom. 3. Tighten the nut on the left side. 4. Tighten the nut on the right side.
7. Once the nuts have all been adequately secured onto the new wheel, gently lower the jack back to the ground to tighten the bolts with the wrench. Once the car is firmly stable on the ground, remove the jack.
8. Taking the lug wrench again, tighten all the bolts completely, using your full body weight if required. To ensure they are tightened safely, repeat the same sequence as previously.
9. Lastly, return the hub cap, wheel cover or centre cover into place if there is one and give your wheel a good shake to make sure it is fitted tightly.
